Managing and Supporting University Windows Computers (MDM)

Managing and Supporting University Windows Computers

Frequently Asked Questions:

Getting started: For initial enrollment, your university computer must be connected to the University’s wired network or VPN. If you are working remotely without VPN access or need help connecting, please Submit a Service Request. The IT Service Desk will help you get started.

Q1. What is Mobile Device Management (MDM)?

MDM is a service that helps UTS keep University computers updated, secure, and easier to support. It also helps deliver the applications and settings faculty and staff need for their work.

Q2. What is changing on my computer?

Your University Windows computer will be enrolled in an updated device management system. This allows UTS to deliver security updates, approved software, and device settings more consistently.

Q3. Why is my computer being enrolled?

Enrollment helps protect your computer and University's information while making technical support more efficient. It helps keep your device current with security updates and ready for your daily work.

Q4. Why is the University implementing MDM?

UTS already uses JAMF to manage and support University's Apple devices. We are extending a similar approach to University Windows computers to:

  • Keep security settings and updates consistent.
  • Make approved software easier to deliver.
  • Resolve more technical issues without a Service Desk visit.
  • Simplify computer setup for faculty and staff.

Q5. Will I notice anything different?

You should be able to continue using your computer as usual, including signing in with your existing NEIU account. You may occasionally see notifications related to software installations, updates, or required restarts.

Q6. Will my files be affected?

Your existing files are expected to remain in place during enrollment. As a regular practice, save important University work in approved storage locations, such as your University Google Drive, and maintain appropriate backups.

Q7. Will I need to restart my computer?

A restart may be needed during enrollment or when updates are installed. If prompted, please save your work before restarting.

Q8. Do I need to do anything to enroll?

Enrollment is automatic once your computer is connected to the University’s wired network or VPN. Please follow any restart prompts that appear.

Q9. Will this include my personal devices?

This rollout applies only to university-issued Windows computers. Your personal devices are not included.

Q10. What information can UTS see through MDM?

MDM helps UTS view technical information needed to support a university computer, such as its operating system version, installed applications, and security status.

Q11. Can MDM track my location or the websites I visit?

No. The MDM solution cannot track this information.

Q12. What security settings will MDM help maintain?

Examples include:

  • Device encryption to protect stored information.
  • Supported Windows versions and security updates.
  • Firewall settings.
  • Anti-virus and other security protections.
  • Settings that help protect University applications and information.

Q13. Will MDM install software on my computer?

MDM allows UTS to deliver University-approved software and updates directly to your computer, making installation and maintenance more convenient.

Q14. Will I need to sign in differently?

You will continue signing in as you do today, using your existing NEIU account.

Q15. What should I do if my university computer is lost or stolen?

Report the loss or theft immediately to the police, then notify the IT Service Desk and Property Control. Prompt reporting helps the University respond and protect University information.

Q16. Will MDM slow down my computer?

MDM is intended to operate with minimal impact on everyday use. Software installations or updates may temporarily use computer resources. If you notice persistent performance issues, please contact the IT Service Desk.

Q17. Can I install additional software?

UTS approval is required before installing additional software on university computers. The review helps ensure applications are appropriately licensed, secure, and compatible with university systems. If you need software for teaching, research, or administrative work, the IT Service Desk can help you through the process.

Q18. How do I request a new application?

Please Submit a Service Request describing the application and how it will support your work.

UTS will review the request for:

  • Teaching, research, or business needs.
  • Security and privacy.
  • Licensing.
  • Compatibility.
  • Support requirements.

If approved, UTS will coordinate installation.

Q19. What happens when my computer is offline?

You can generally continue using installed applications and locally stored files that do not require an Internet connection. New updates, software, and device settings will be delivered after your computer reconnects to the Internet.

Q20. Should I expect any downtime?

Enrollment is expected to cause minimal disruption. Some software installations or updates may require a restart. Please save your work when a restart is requested.

Q21. How should I prepare for enrollment?

Connect your computer to the University’s wired network or VPN. No special preparation is otherwise expected. As always, keep important University files in approved storage locations and maintain appropriate backups.

Q22. What happens to my existing applications?

Existing applications are expected to remain available during enrollment. If an application stops working or you notice an unexpected change, please contact the IT Service Desk for assistance.

Q23. Where can I get help or ask questions?

The IT Service Desk is available to help with enrollment, technical issues, and questions about what MDM means for your university computer.
